A Simple Click Really Helps

It’s official: Apple is releasing iOS 10, the next update to its mobile operating system, on September 13, three days before the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus hit stores.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has described iOS 10 as the company’s “most advanced mobile operating system” to date. Among the new features arriving with the update are a redesigned lock screen, a more intelligent Siri digital assistant with support for more apps, a variety of new effects and animations for Messages, and fresh looks for Maps, News, Photos and Apple Music.

The release date for iOS 10 was announced yesterday during an Apple event where the company also unveiled the new iPhones and a new lineup of Apple Watches. Apple’s new watchOS 3 operating system is set to launch tomorrow, while its macOS Sierra update is due for release on September 20 and the tvOS 10 update for Apple TV is expected to come out later this fall.

Updates to Maps, Photos, Messages

First previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in June, iOS 10 will add a number of new capabilities to iPhones and iPads. For example, the OS will introduce Raise to Wake, which automatically wakes the phone screen when a device is picked up. It will also add deeper integration with 3D Touch, making it easier for users to preview and control apps depending upon the type of touch they apply.

The new operating system will be built-in to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which will be available for pre-ordering starting tomorrow. It can also be installed on compatible devices, including the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, as well as the iPhone 5, 5c 5s and iPhone SE.

Other changes that Apple will introduce in iOS 10 include a redesigned and more proactive Maps feature, new sorting and categorizing capabilities for Photos, subscriptions for Apple News and voicemail transcriptions for missed calls for users who don’t want to have to listen to their voicemail messages. The update will also add new emojis, bubble effects and video effects for Messages.

Some more iOS 10 Features

More Home Automation, Siri Smarts

With iOS 10 and its Home app, Apple will also bring even more smart-home control capabilities to its mobile devices. Some 100 products have been built using its HomeKit automation standard, including thermostats, lights, garage-door openers, door locks and more, according to Apple. Several home builders are also expected to begin integrating such automation into new construction this year, the company said.

Apple’s iOS update will also introduce Apple Pay capabilities to the Web, allowing iPhone and Apple Watch owners to use the payment system to make purchases via desktop devices with connected phones or watches.

With iOS 10, Apple is also opening up Siri to developers with SiriKit, enabling them to create new apps that integrate with the intelligent assistant. Other new features arriving with the update include a new caller ID extension for spam alerts, split-view support for iPads, Siri-enabled contextual predictions while using QuickType and a new technology called Differential Privacy that Apple said will help “improve QuickType and emoji suggestions, Spotlight deep link suggestions and Lookup Hints in Notes.”
